What are the rules for coaching a ministry team?

By charlie worley
Coaching ministry teams can be challenging, but your task will be a lot easier if you follow certain rules. Read some suggested rules for coaching or leading a ministry team in your church or organization.

Coaching small teams has many similarities to coaching one person, but it also is different. Therefore, I am suggesting some rules for coaching small teams or groups. The following are not scientifically studied and proven rules but are more like guidelines from a coach with experience coaching teams.

  1. Always have some food available at team meetings.
  2. Everyone talks and participates.
  3. Identify group roles at the first meeting or by the end of the second meeting at the latest.
  4. Use an agenda.
  5. Use a team covenant.
  6. Connect the team to the appropriate pastor, church leader, or ministry leader.
  7. Provide appropriate skill training.
  8. The team makes the decisions.
  9. Quickly manage group dysfunctions.
  10. End meetings on time if not before with a summary of accomplishments and assignments.
