Coaching ministry teams can be challenging, but your task will be a lot easier if you follow certain rules. Read some suggested rules for coaching or leading a ministry team in your church or organization.
Coaching small teams has many similarities to coaching one person, but it also is different. Therefore, I am suggesting some rules for coaching small teams or groups. The following are not scientifically studied and proven rules but are more like guidelines from a coach with experience coaching teams.
- Always have some food available at team meetings.
- Everyone talks and participates.
- Identify group roles at the first meeting or by the end of the second meeting at the latest.
- Use an agenda.
- Use a team covenant.
- Connect the team to the appropriate pastor, church leader, or ministry leader.
- Provide appropriate skill training.
- The team makes the decisions.
- Quickly manage group dysfunctions.
- End meetings on time if not before with a summary of accomplishments and assignments.
This list is adapted from Chapter 8 in my recent book, Creating Ministry Champions. (pages 181-187) You may order a copy from Amazon at https://amzn.to/32eoKuZ/.
