Ministry coaches have the opportunity to work with teams in the church, but to be effective as a coach, you need to know and follow the rules. This blog outlines 10 Rules for coaching ministry teams.
Coaching small teams of 3-7 people has many similarities to coaching one person, but it also is different. Therefore I am suggesting some rules for coaching small teams or groups. These are not scientifically studied and proved rules but are more like guidelines from a coach with experience in coaching teams.
Rule #1: Always have some food available at team meetings.
Rule #2: Everyone talks and participates.
Rule #3: Identify group roles at the first meeting, or by the end of the second meeting at the latest.
Rule #4: Use an agenda.
Rule #5: Use a team covenant.
Rule #6: Connect the team to the governing board.
Rule #7: Provide appropriate skill training.
Rule #8: The team makes the decisions.
Rule #9: Quickly manage group dysfunctions.
Rule #10: End meetings on time if not before with a summary of accomplishments and assignments.
