10 Mistakes Pastor Search Committees Make

By charlie worley
All church ministries, committees, boards, and teams make mistakes, but when that happens by one, in particular, the results can be far-reaching and long-lasting. This blog lists some of the most common mistakes made by pastor search committees in churches.

Not developing and implementing a church-wide prayer strategy for the pastor search process – apply Luke 10:2

Trying to have the Elders or church governing body multitask the search for a new pastor making the search process just one of several leadership responsibilities – focus on finding

Failing to do a thorough background check including criminal and abuse history searches – never assume character

Taking an informal search approach without adequate planning and following meeting agendas – plan on success

Not communicating with the church family on a weekly basis the progress and prayer needs of the search process – communicate, communicate, communicate

Failure to seek church-wide member input on church needs and vision for the qualifications of a new pastor that best fits the church – get everyone involved

Not developing a behavioral interview approach to interviewing potential candidates – research past behavior

Designing a candidating process that is not thorough enough – plan maximum exposure

Candidating before completing adequate primary and secondary reference checks – find the truth

Trying to search for a new pastor without having clear mission, vision, and values statements for the church – attract to vision

What's another that you would add to this list?
